  • PROCRASTINATION – Friend or a Foe

Some time back I was thinking if I had to write articles or not… I thoughts that were holding me back were… what if I don’t present my Idea in a pleasing manner? What if some one finds some mistake in it? What if some one makes some thing better than this? Then I started with the thought.. Well there will be some one who has done these things earlier, why should I do some thing new? Why should I not follow that.. I might be happy with agreeing 90% with some one!! Then why should I write it… well let think about it some other time.. if needed I will write.

All through the dilemma – “To write something that was original to me or not” I was PROCRASTINATING. Searching for the perfect and internally possessed by the “Fear of Failure”. This is the actual enemy that prevents us from achieving what we are capable of. We keep pushing things till we realize that we cannot push it any further.. till we have no escape from doing some thing by compulsion. Well in the above scenario it’s not all that serious but still has a message for the bigger scenario… “The point of compulsion”.

When you are compelled to do something.. I personally feel we don’t give it our full effort.. We do it in a half hearted effort more with the thought of having to get done with it than just doing it by will. This leads to imperfections.. This leads to incomplete and sub standard work. and sub standard work always leads to dissatisfaction amongst those who expected the work from you… this will coax them to complaint about your effort, intern triggering the cycle again – the cycle of PROCRASTINATION.

    Well what is PROCRASTINATION?

Procrastination is the deferment or avoidance of an action or task and is often linked to Perfectionism. For the person procrastinating this may result in stress, a sense of guilt, the loss of productivity, the creation of crisis, and the charging of others for not fulfilling one’s responsibilities or commitments. While it is normal for individuals to procrastinate to some degree, it becomes a problem when it impedes normal functioning. Chronic procrastination may be a sign of an underlying psychological or physiological disorder.

Harold Taylor defines procrastination as the intentional and habitual postponement of an important task that should be done now.

As mentioned above in the definition and explanation section, procrastination is not always bad, it good to delay a decision till we are clear about it, and there by make a better and more sound decision, but this should not push the decision indefinitely – there is definitely a breaking point beyond which we cannot procrastinate.. Knowing this limit is very important to use procrastination to an advantage. This is not just with regard to decisions that we take on procrastination, it applies to the work we want to do.

We try delaying the work till we feel comfortable.. What exactly if the comfort level? Where does this end? Where does procrastination become an enemy from a friend?

This decision can be taken only by practice; it is as a product of our habit and experience that we can determine when we have reached the limit of procrastination. Its this procrastination in decision making that can help us make a better analysis and assessment.. But if we miss the stipulated time frame, we loose all things.. We lose the whole purpose and then we incur huge losses. Evidently the limit can only be got by practicing and looking at the surroundings and at the situation more carefully.

Well how do I stop Procrastinating too much?

Humm.. this we have to understand really well. Procrastinating might have got to be a habit… and habits are hard to change.. still we follow some steps to reduce procrastination to the appropriate extent. Let me try to do this in a bit of organized manner – i.e. dealing with the reason and then giving suggestions to handle them…

Procrastination can be analysed by their root and some suggestions are noted down here. We can classify these tasks into two broad class:

    TASK STRATEGIES:

    Unpleasant tasks:

we have to realize that rarely unpleasant task turns out to be as bad as we think they are. We can schedule these tasks to the beginning of the day… this will help us finish off these tasks at the earliest. On completing them give your self regards for having completed them.

    Complex Projects

Something looms ahead of you: starting a small business, getting a job, preparing the annual budget. The job is too big or will take too long to do now, so you put it off.

The solution here is to break the large job into small manageable ones over a time frame.. Plan and complete a start-up task, no matter how small.

    Indecision

People delay because they can’t make up their minds. Determine a time for making a decision and the criteria for making it. Share your deadline with someone else.

Fear of failure (lack of self confidence)

People don’t want to face the consequences of failure, so they delay. (Some people suffer from fear of success too!)

Develop a clear mental picture of the completed task and how you will feel at that time. Maintain a focus on the end result, not just the process. Remind yourself how good you’ll feel when you’re finished. this helps improve your confidence ..and pushes you to perform.

    Lack of interest

You are tired or lazy. You’re just not very interested in the task. This is one of the most paining reasons as it has the feel – “I can but I wont”.

Reward yourself for accomplishments. Go out for special lunches when major projects are completed. If you don’t earn the reward, don’t take it. Schedule th
e task of fun and enjoyment for when you will be at your peak, that will keep the enthusiasm.

    Perfectionism

People delay because they want to get perfect. Set deadlines for yourself. Tell other people your deadlines and encourage them to check up on you. Maintain your high standards, but recognize that sometimes 80% for you may well be 100% for someone else. Don’t spend hours conducting a detailed cost breakdown when a rough estimate would suffice. This is to set bench mark for your performance.. its better to have our goals high so that it exceeds the expectations of the person who is inspecting you. This increases you confidence as well.

    Hostility towards a boss

People delay because they don’t like the person who assigned the task.

Review with your boss what exactly is needed. Clarify the expectations. Make a game out of unpleasant tasks. Give yourself points, or do a running commentary on yourself as you do the task. Just make it a fun working the task that’s the Idea.

    Distraction, lack of focus

    Sometimes losing concentration causes delays.

Create a to-do list with priorities, Block your time for projects, As you get distracted from a work project, make a rule that you are not allowed to move out of your chair, make a call, surf the net, pick up a book etc. until you return to your task. Complete something. Make a very small task for yourself and finish it. Then, make another one.

    ENVIRONMENT STRATEGIES

Tailor your environment for work. Close your door, clean up the clutter on your desk.

Remove distractions such as water coolers, snacks, in-boxes, coffee machines and magazine racks.

If you work at home, treat your office as an office. Don’t go out to lunch before lunchtime or watch television before the end of the day.

Tell your family that you are not to be disturbed in your home office.

These are for the solution part of the problem of procrastinating…… I believe can help us get out of this habit.

After going though these suggestions now I always believe in “Let the thought of fear not take away the Joy of success later”. I think in these lines most of the time. If I loose I don’t loose the lesson. I may look childish in my attempts but, I am ready to learn like a child. This is my Inspiration.. this is my style of life now. Its been exciting ever since I took to
this style.. I have been happy really happy now.

Look into and let me know if these strategies have helped you reduce the delays due to Procrastinating and made you proactive.

  • India Poised

This is a very nice initiative that the “Times of India” has taken up. Every day we look at the first page of any newspaper read about accidents, the crimes, the coups, the failures, political jugglery and many similar things. This initiative has brought out a lot of inspiration in me… now I look forward to the second page of “Times of India” almost daily.
The anthem that is shared in the India Poised site is a true inspiration. I love reiterating it in my mind, make me proud.
The sort of commitment the heroes who are giving to the society makes us really proud of them.
Will share my thoughts on these things and many more.
This may well be a publicity stunt in the long run but for now I am really happy that there is some place where people actually can appreciate and feel proud about the achievers in out country.

  • to do or not to do !!!

This is one of the most boggling questions that confuses people. This is the question that keeps us from achieving or loosing it all together. There is a saying “Winners never quit and Quitters never Win.” This is just an extension of the well known quote.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step… that right, one who goes is the one who gets (read as achieves). So with all this around I don’t think there will any ways be the point of to do or not to do it’s only going to be “do and more do”.

There is no harm in trying what we have never tried, that is the only way we will get over our fear of failure. We fail only when we don’t try i.e. we quit trying, till we try and we have the strength to improve we can achieve our goal. It’s only that we are living in a frightened world… the fear of failure tends to take the joy of success away.

We have to be bold enough to face our own self. This is the way we are, we know we have to get some where then there is no point in thinking if we have to start or not. What that finally matter is the experience that we gain. Experience that we gain is more important than the end result of the attempt. The thing that lives with us in the long run (our life) is not the laurel that we would gain on victory, it’s the lessons that we learnt and can improve up on and apply further in our life.

  • Truth is stranger than fiction.

“Truth is stranger than fiction”…. The first time I heard this phrase was in the Hindi cinema – “Aankhe”. I little believed this at the first hearing. As life moves on it has thought that all the conventional knowledge that we gain in every day life has not let us imagine every possibility. I think it biases us so that we don’t get going with an open mind, expect and accept all things that can come out.

The knowledge that we gain in sciences today doesn’t explain every thing that we see. Every time we try to explain the off mark understanding will put us in paradoxes. Solving this paradox gives us a different but a better understanding of life. We have got to be open-minded.

We expect something based on our previous experience and understanding, but we have some thing to learn when we get some thing that we have not expected. The unexpected may be a good one or a bad one; but it’s actually the lack of optimism or the prejudiced thought that stopped us expecting stating it as fictions.

  • Mungggaru MaLe

I saw this kannada movie Mungaaru MaLe and loved it. I saw it some time back but did not find time to write a review immediately, so am doin it now.
    Hero Ganesh,
though is plump.. has a baby face and a million dollar smile. he has a great timing, great dialogue delivery, great spontaneity. The heroin Sanjana Gandhi not all that great. Director Yogaraja Bhatt has done some real magic in the lowest budget possible. Screening of JOG FALLS (helicopter shots) is awesome (Its the main reason I went to see it). song picturization is awesome. photography is great. beautiful backdrop of first monsoon rains (= mungaaru maLe) in each and every frame. Sakaleshpur, Madikeri, Jog falls.. awesome locations.
A lovely rabbit ‘devdas’ keeps a lot of feeling in the minds of the audience all through the movie. A great movie, its a super duper hit already. Is running house full since a long time.

Go watch it. don’t miss the movie.

  • BangaaraDa Manushya.

Its been a long time since I had brought the CD. But found time to have a look at it. I did watch it some 2 weeks back. Here are some things that I take from it.
It was a path breaker and also a record breaker in a lot of aspects. Gives the concept of Co-operative farming, I think its was a major message that the director wanted to convey to his audience. I am not sure it was taken up by the people, but if it had been taken it would have made a lot of impact on the people.
The charcter played by Dr Raj, is a vey mature one. Though he has done a part of his education at the city, he understands that responcibilities that are immediately to be fulfilled carries a lot of message to those who think they loose their dignity if they stay in a village!!!
Every person in life would encounter a lot of false publicity once he reaches a certain level of popularity, We have to handle these situations in a mature manner.
Well this is just a small bit of the vast number of messages it gives… Its a must see in case you like kannada movies.

  • “Dar ke age Jeet Hai” – The Mountain Dew ad

I love this ad for its workings made a lot of sense, I dont car about what it is about but the wordings are just too good.

The wordings are something like this:
“Dar kisko nahi lagta.” “Dar dekh ke kiska gala nahi sookta?”
“Jo hekte hein unhe dar nahi lagta vo Jhoot bol rahe hey. Dar sab ko Lagta hey”
“Lekin jo log Dar se age nikalte hey, vohi jeet ko pate hein.”
“Dar se mat Daro, Dar ke age Jeet hey”
This is just a capsule to get us rid from our fear, Beyond fear there is success, there is achievement. So “No Fear” has to be the mantra for success.

    Love the wordings a lot.

  • R. K. Narayan

I had read a few short stories written by RKN as part of the curriculum in school. I loved his style of writing, very picturesque style. You an actually vialize the surrounding very precisely.. the description he gives is that good.
His novels range over a lot of topics… The most famous being “The Malgudi Days” and “Swami and Friends”.
Reading his books is always a pleasure for me, I dont generally read novels but he is just too good.

  • 1/0 is infinity

Well I am writing this not coz no one knows but coz it will help some who dont know to understand it.
It is said that 1/0 is infinity. Well actually it only tends to infinity and is not exactly infinity, but can safely assumed to be based on the proof.

    The proof is simple:
    1/(1/10) = 10
    1/ (1/100) = 100 note 1/100 < 1/10 and the result increases from 10 to 100
    1/ (1/1000) = 1000 …
    so on…

The basic understanding that can be derived from here is that as the denominator gets smaller and smaller the value get larger.
Assuming that zero is the smallest possible value possible, 1/0 has to be infinity….
    Simple right!!! [:)]

  • diffrentiation

Well this is my understandin of Diffrentiation…. its easy if we understand this.. but the graphical method is undoubtably the best if thought properly.

    x^2 when diffrentiated gives 2x.
Ha ha, where the hell do you think this will be used, I can use it more better only if I understand it well na!!
ok the understanding can be got simply by replacing by numbers say I replace 1000 instead of x.
    so x^2 should be 1000000
    ie
    x = 1000 => x^2 = 1000000

    Now assume I increase x by 1
    so we have x = 1001 and so x^2 = 1002001,
    ie
    x = 1001 => x^2 = 1002001

so we see that the change is just most significantly 2*x* the change + a miniscle number
The number being more smaller the change becomes very prominent only on the 2x part.
so that is why we have
    derivative of x^2 is 2x
Similarly we can get the description for x^3
    and so on!!!

    You may ask…
    x = 1000.5 => x^2 = 1001000.25
which is not 2x!!! well that is why in the first principles of diffrentiation we do have to devide by the inc. and then ignore the very small value when compared to the large value. So that we can approximate the change at any place to be 2x.
ie the change is around 2*x*the inc!!! inc being small, and then normalizing using the small inc (very small but not zero!!!) we realize that the change is just 2 times x …. why normalize?? coz that will make it more generic rt!!! [:)]…said in other words… we have now made the change in the whole values as independent as possible of the minute changes!!!.

Well all this is just gimic.. the actual meaning of a derivative is the rate at which somethign is changing…
Lets understand it better by taking a line say y = x
    the derivative is 1….
it means that there is no change of the rate at which the slope is changing.. its constant.
Now if we have a parabola say y = x^2
    Lets see this
    x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

    y 1 4 9 16 25 36 49 64

    dX 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

    dY 3 5 7 9 11 13 15

dY/Dx 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 — we see that the values are all odd integers and can be represented by a straight line so the derivative of a parablola is a line..
It is at each of these minute intervals if we calulate the slope.. the rate at which the slope of the prabola changes we get that to be a straight line.
